Tuesday, Nov. 21, some students from Ignacio Elementary wore their traditional regalia to celebrate who they are and to recognize their heritage. Students: Tia Howe, Cyana Whiteskunk, Sakarii Goodtracks, Miracle William and Sophia Begaye wrote letters to their principal Shauna Branch asking if they can begin a “Rock Your Mocs” tradition at Ignacio Elementary School. “Rock Your Mocs” is celebrated across many tribal nations for Native American Heritage month and is generally celebrated on Nov. 15.   

On Nov. 21, Ignacio Middle School hosted a Native American Heritage celebration at Ignacio Middle School and was joined by the elementary students, some wearing their traditional regalia. Dancers and royalty gathered to share with the elementary and middle school students about the different dances and honoring their ancestors. It was a beautiful celebration and fun to see so many students participating in the event.
