Sharika Blockett and McShall Wong, two recipients of the Torrey Pines Kiwanis Scholarship Ski Program; which is within the Adaptive Sports Association, received grants to participate in a four day, all-expense paid trip to Ski at Purgatory in Durango, Colo. Both Blockett and Wong are honorably discharged veterans; Blockett served in U.S Army as a Truck Vehicle Mechanic for nine years and Wong served in United States Marine Corp for five years.

The scholarship brings participants to Durango, where they stay with local residents who open their homes as host families. The Southern Ute Veterans Association honored both Blockett and Wong as Honorably Discharged Vets during an evening dinner at Mutu’s Italian Restaurant on Thursday, Jan. 11. The veterans presented them mugs and coins with the Veterans Logo on them. Raymond Baker, Veterans Association Vice Commander, was the host family for both of the veterans while they were in town.

The mission of the Adaptive Sports Association is to provide outdoor, sport and recreational experiences for people and veterans who have disabilities.
